The Future with Driverless Cars

Post by: Sai Chavali

Many people gleam at the idea of driverless cars or autonomous vehicles (AVs) relieving them the pressure of focusing on the road.

AVs have a significantly positive impact on our daily lives because of features like lane-assist warnings to alert drivers if their vehicle strays across a solid line, automated parallel parking, automatic front-end braking to help reduce head-on collisions, blind-spot assistance and vehicle location apps to alert parents if their teenage drivers go beyond a set range or above a safe speed. AVs have the ability to ensure the safety of all drivers, particularly new and young drivers, leading to fewer automobile crashes. This is especially important considering that according to the CDC, each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Another positive impact on our daily lives is that auto insurance rates will drastically decrease if all cars on the road are AVs. Families care most about their ability to afford their children a safe and quality lifestyle and autonomous vehicles help with this mission.

AVs will also impact businesses where truckers are needed to transport goods to various places. According to a Yale Climate Connection article, while AV technology may decrease the cost of driving, it may also lead to increased congestion and have a negative effect on our economy. This is because all the human jobs in public transit and crash repair will be replaced by AVs. As a result, when our economies suffer, the global economy suffers since many countries in the world rely on the strength and success of the United States. Furthermore, much of the currency trading in the Forex market uses the US dollar because many countries trust the stability of the US dollar more than they do their own currency. I believe there is a very high chance the advent of AVs will lead to the US economy suffering so the chance that the global economy and the Forex market will subsequently suffer is also very high. All in all, AVs will drastically change the way we live, work and play and have both positive and negative consequences on our global society.
