One developing technological innovation is the point-of-care biosensors. These biosensors are used at the patient’s bedside for immediate and on the spot testing rather than needing to go to the laboratory. This has a positive impact for global society because these biosensors provide doctors, clinicians, and patients with rapid results. These diagnostics allow patients to walk in and walk out of hospitals relatively quickly with their results in their hand. In addition, with such rapid diagnosis, doctors and patients can focus more time on discussing treatment plans rather than waiting for results from the lab which take weeks. Furthermore, in developing countries, these biosensors are of great use. This is because hospitals in developing countries get a lot of patients but they lack adequate resources. They have limited supplies and they do not have much medical equipment. Diagnosis equipment and machinery in diagnostics labs are expensive and complicated to use. However, with point-of-care biosensors, they are cheaper and easy to use. In a diagnostic lab, there are several technicians on-site analyzing the tests and producing test results. However, with the ease of biosensors, such technicians are not required because doctors are able to perform and analyze these tests at the bedside of the patient. This is a good benefit for developing countries because they do not need to hire and train additional medical personnel to analyze results when they can solely rely on their available doctors. Also, having rapid results, these biosensors can allow doctors in developing countries to see patients at a faster rate. Additionally, point-of-care biosensor is a portable device. This even allows for on-site testing in battle fields, where treatment needs to be fast .
Point-of-care biosensors can change the way we live. This is because since these biosensors are easy to use and are accurate doctors and patients will be using them often rather than sending tests to a diagnostics lab which takes weeks to process. Furthermore, patients can use these biosensors at home even without needing to go to the hospital. If they want to determine if they might have a specific disease or condition, they can simply order a relevant point-of-care biosensor and perform the test themselves.
