Globally, tobacco use killed 100 million people in the 20th century, much more than all deaths in World Wars I and II combined. Tobacco-related deaths will number around 1 billion in the 21st century if current smoking patterns continue. (The Tobacco Atlas). Nowadays, people start to realize that tobacco is a great threat to their health and try to quit smoking. Recently, a great technological innovation of tobacco products — e-cigarette, started to emerge and became a good replacement for normal cigarette. An e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that vaporizes a flavored liquid. The fluid in the e-cigarette, called e-liquid, is usually made of nicotine, propylene glycol, and flavorings. E-cigarettes are likely safer than tobacco cigarettes because they contain less toxins and heavy metals. Moreover, a study showed that smoking e-cigarettes alleviated the desire to smoke and helped some participants successfully quit smoking. However, this innovation also brings some negative consequences. A 2010 research paper published in Tobacco Control suggests that the e-cigarette lacks important regulatory factors, such as essential health warnings, proper labeling. Moreover, a study published in the December 2011 issue of CHEST found that e-cigarettes caused acute pulmonary effects after smoking it for only five minutes, although study authors pointed out that these effects may not be of clinical significance. E-cigarette indeed brings some social impacts. E-cigarette starts gaining more market share in tobacco market. The demand for e-cigarettes escalated since 2012 and is anticipated to grow over $50 billion by 2025 at an estimated CAGR of 22.36% from 2015 to 2025 (BIS). Using e-cigarette significantly changes some people’s life. More and more people join into the “quitting smoking movement” and become daily users for e-cigarettes which could help them alleviate the desire to smoke. Moreover, Many people choose e-cigarettes because they can expect to save a substantial amount of money when vaping as compared to smoking. In conclusion, e-cigarette is a great technological innovation of tobacco products that bring many advantages to people but it also involves some potential risks.
